GRDP in Sub-Saharan Africa

February 19, 2007

In March, GRDP staff went to Kenya and Uganda with the American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA) for a program development and monitoring trip. GRDP partnered with AFCA, whose mission is to improve the lives of children and youth struggling with the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. They provide cost-effective relief, services, medical and social support, education, and advocacy to help these victims achieve their full life potential. Currently AFCA is implementing a life-saving program to deliver free anti-retroviral medications to children suffering with HIV/AIDS through community-based hospitals in eastern Africa.

Amy Kester, Director of Program Development and Tanya Weaver, Executive Director of AFCA, visited project sites including St. Mary’s Mission Hospital (Nairobi, Kenya,), the Diocese of Mombasa (Mombasa, Kenya), and Mulago Hospital (Kampala, Uganda). Tanya described the trip as “AFCA’s opportunity to visit our Kenyan and Ugandan partners; audit how donated medicines are stored, inventoried and distributed; assess current needs; and determine how we can further assist them. Most importantly, it allowed us to visit the children whom we serve and ensure that AFCA and its generous donors are giving them a new chance at life.” With AIDS remaining the leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa, staff met with potential new partners and donors to discuss expanding AFCA’s services.
